Eagles girls knock off the New Mexico Renegades 3-2 in double overtime to win the 2011 Mountain States Girls Hockey League Championship.
In a season filled with many challenges the Colorado Junior Eagles Girls
U19 team took home the MSGHL League Championship for 2011. The Eagles
girls had only been back on the ice a couple times since suffering
serious carbon monoxide poisoning in Gunnison, so the Eagles coaching
staff wasn't not exactly sure what to expect when the Eagles hit the ice
in game one versus a young but talented team from Summit. The Eagles
girls started the tournament strong winning game one 5-1 and outshooting
their opponent 32 to 9. The Eagles Lauren Johnson had a hat trick in the game as her and her line-mates Kalli Kube and Mackenzie Guttormson
accounted for 4 of the 5 goals in the game. In game two the Eagles
girls faced the number 3 seeded Vail U19 team and continued to roll
winning game two 7-2 with a strong defensive performance by Hadley Jouflas and Lexe Svisco. The defense also chipped in goals as Jenna McDonald scored a long shot from the point and Amy Streeter scored two of the Eagles 7 goals.
In the third game of the tournament the Eagles faced the number 2 seeded
New Mexico Renegades and found that winning a 2nd league championship
in three years was going to be no easy task. The New Mexico team had a
tough time containing the Junior Eagles fast skating Allyson Stibbards who had
multiple shots on net and was only kept off the scoreboard due to some
fantastic saves by the New Mexico net-minder. The only goal of the game
was scored by Eilleen Cox on a great play from Ally Werhane and Mackenzie Nicholson. Eagles goalie Sydney Firmin posted a shutout in the game and the Eagles squeaked out a 1-0 win forcing a re-match with New Mexico in Sunday's championship game.
On Sunday the Junior Eagles girls were all set to face off against New
Mexico one more time for all the marbles but this time the girls from
New Mexico were ready to play and scored first at 7:03 in the first
period on a long shot from the point. The Eagles struggled to generate
any offense at all but managed to tie up the game when Mackenzie Nicholson banged in a rebound on a great play by Ally Werhane. That
excitement was short lived as the Renegades scored again in the second
period just as time was expiring. Being down by a goal in the third
period the Eagles girls never gave up, yet injuries were starting to
accumulate as both Eileen Cox and Mackenzie Guttormson suffered knee injuries. Late in the third period Kalli Kube shot a long shot at an impossible angle but some how, some way, the puck found it's way into the net forcing overtime.
In the first overtime both New Mexico's goalie and the Eagles goalie Sydney Firmin
held strong and neither team could win it in the sudden death
situation. The game went into the second overtime and the Eagles coaches
moved Jenna McDonald up to play offense since the injuries had
greatly affected the Eagles forward lines. That move proved to be the
difference as late in the second overtime period Jenna through a puck towards the net
which was deflected high into the air eventually coming down and
trickling into the net giving the Eagles girls a thrilling double
overtime win. The Eagles didn't play their best game of the season in
the championship game but did play penalty free which helped them on
their way to a miracle finish of a most memorable season.
